• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Memoires of a recent visit

It is always interesting to hear what people who visit our islands think of the place we call home. Nick Truby is one such person. He is a visiting birder from Oxfordshire who stayed on the Uists for two weeks recently for the very first time and recounts his experiences and thoughts through his blog which can be read here. It is a very interesting read and contains some great photographs.

I particularly liked his recollection of seeing a male Hen Harrier in Bornish which :- “drifted over the garden of a local pottery studio. Maybe it took a liking to one of the many clay penguins that adorn the lawns there!” Perhaps if Miranda had been on hand, she would have informed him that they are not penguins but Great Auks!

For those not used to navigating around blogs, his entries to date can be read in sequence by clicking on the links below:-

2 - R ‘n’ R and first impressions
3 - Crex Crex and Success!
4 - A little stint at touring around the local area. (added 26 June)
5 - On the rocks (added 28 June)
6 - Mor (added 3 July)
7 - A Touch of Gold (added 10 July)
8 - Diving and Craking (added 17 July)
9 - Head for the Headland (added 4 August)

Thanks for the link. Nick was on the Uists at the same time as I arrived on 3rd so it is interesting to compare notes (and weather conditions).
Sadly I can't get his photos for some reason although I can "see" where they should be as a reference.

Hmmm, that's very strange @Fred neither MisterT nor myself are having any problems seeing Nick's photos - perhaps your browser is blocking them for some reason?

Highly likely. It likes to bully me to join Facebook from time to time and sulks when I won't.
I have an IT man coming on Monday so together we will gang up on it.
