• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. The Greenshank on Loch Hallan was joined today by 2 Common Sandpipers, 4 Snipe, 3 Whimbrel and 8 Curlew. Wader numbers continue to increase on the beach here at Askernish with Sanderling now numbering around 250. With them at low tide were also 50+ Dunlin, 40+ Ringed Plover, 43 Knot and another 4 Whimbrel.
At the Sand Martin colony (26 active nests this year), the young will fledge very soon with a number begging for food at the nest entrance
