• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. There was four Coot on the Loch on New Years morning but maybe they were scared of by the six white tailed eagles that were also by the side of the Loch. I’m only up to 51 species but that’s only from the garden and an hours watching on New Years morning on Benbecula

    Local Rarity 6th August 2018

It’s that time of year again with the Starlings coming to roost in the trees in the garden, but I’ve just been watching a bizarre site with a Grey Heron acrobaticly attempting to catch Starlings out of the flock in flight. I’ve never seen Herons fly like that before. As far as I could tell it...

    Local Rarity 1st January 2018

No I didn’t have anything unusual but did pick up almost all of the wader species one could reasonably expect in Uist in winter with the exception of Snipe and had the three Little Egrets at Loch Mor. I was most impressed with the total as I only visited Loch Bee and Benbecula so could have...

When I was on the range this afternoon there was just less than 1000 Golden Plover! Also about 600 on Torlum machair and 800 at Balelone on North Uist where there was also 2200 Barnacle Geese. I guess they're waiting for the wind to change.
