• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. I am a fully paid-up member of the 'no means a gull expert' club! I am sure you are right - it was the length of the bill and slope of forehead that got my interest but they must fall within natural variation.

This gull was in Stinky Bay around midday today. In size between a Common Gull and a Herring Gull but nearer the latter. Having thought of Common, Herring and Ring-billed Gull, it doesn't seem right for any of them. Any ideas?!

Thanks Yvonne. I think #1 is firming up to Redhank. Not so sure about Blackbird for #4 but interested to see if there are other views. Still fascinating but frustrating. Pretty sure I had Little Grebe yesterday early. The link is here.

This is the odd set of calls Yvonne referred to that I recorded on 21/4/21 at 23:29 and on 22/4/21 at 01:09 & 03:07. The few people who have offered something lean towards Water Rail. Any advice/help appreciated.

Having been to Ardivachar a few times and seen up to 7 of the White-rumped Sandpipers scattered along the pools, today all six I could see were together, with no other small waders about at all. Quite a gloomy light but hopefully you can at least see the six birds!
