• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Gosh. I thought at first glance your gruesome find was a Short-eared Owl in a Gintrap. Thanks heaven for small mercies. Keep up the good work and save some nice sightings for my next visit on First of June.. Tea and biccies, or something stronger in my shed although I cannot promise a pair of...

Good to see the Hosta colony thriving. I was a bit concerned this year to see some 'sand slip' on the dune face. Then one afternoon some local children decided to practice their 'knickerbocker breaking' skills as well but the birds did return.. I shall look out for them again in 2018.

    Memoires of a recent visit

Highly likely. It likes to bully me to join Facebook from time to time and sulks when I won't. I have an IT man coming on Monday so together we will gang up on it. Fred

    Help for Visitors.

Thanks Yvonne. Pictures posted. I have some Slovenian friends visiting Lewis/Uist in August. I have told them birds will not be so good but is it OK if i get them to contact you? Memoires of a recent visit

Thanks for the link. Nick was on the Uists at the same time as I arrived on 3rd so it is interesting to compare notes (and weather conditions). Sadly I can't get his photos for some reason although I can "see" where they should be as a reference.

I have no...

Many thanks for the kind offer @YvonneB. Looks like we may even be near neighbours for a few days if you are literal on "end of May" so I shall certainly take you up on the offer of a meeting and information. Expect a call.

    Help for Visitors.

I am not clear if this is an appropriate subject for either the forum or the thread so forgive me if I transgress some rule or other. Basically I have visited the Outer Islands for the past few years and think I know my way around the southern ones. However apart from a fleeting, 3 day visit to...

    Scottish Rarity 29th April 2017

Out of date already but having read through these lists regularly I have to comment on the brilliant way of Highlighting locations with the link to a map referred to above by Hawkeye. A great help. I can now stop scribbling names down on a scrap of paper for my next visit. (I was having...
