• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Not much change on Barra. The White-billed Diver was still off Eoligarry this morning and 34 Snow Buntings were on the beach. The wintering flock of c200 Barnacle Geese here contained a ringed bird that I saw here back in April '17. It was originally ringed on Islay in '13 and was also seen there in October '17. At Traigh Mhor there were 27 Brent Geese and the parvipes type Canada Goose was still among the Barnies at Borve. The Coot was still on Loch Tangasdale.
