• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Barra.
2 juvenile Cuckoos were still around the Glen area this morning. Grasshopper Warbler, Blackcap, Sedge Warbler and several Whitethroats were still around Brevig, no doubt local breeders and 2 Storm Petrels were off Cleat during a brief scan mid morning. A ringed Lesser Black-backed Gull was at Traigh Mhor; the same bird Spanish ringed seen nearby by Ian and Yvonne in July last year. I'm awaiting a reply from the ringer in case it's been seen elsewhere in the intervening period. This bird appears to be paired up and is presumably a local breeder.
