• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. North Uist: a few recently fledged Arctic Terns were present at the small colony near Baleshare beach this morning. Last year the colony was visited by a number of cats housed in a byre at Teanamachar. I believe the population now stands at 18 (plus kittens born recently). Entreaties to the owner to do something about this sad state of affairs have so far fallen on deaf ears.

At nearby Lag Gorm a Starling was in 'spread-wing' sunning posture. Not in itself unusual but it was on a reposing sheep.

While cutting the grass in the afternoon at Carinish a pair of White-tailed Eagles came over and drifted away towards Eaval.
