• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Always Birding
I have always seen Collared Doves arrive in Askernish, sometimes in large numbers, only to be gone the next day and wondered where they went. I therefore began to colour ring them several years ago and at last one has been seen, and in the most unlikely of places. Yesterday I received information from David Cooper & Brenda Kay to say that they had seen a colour ringed bird [A13] in their garden in Norwick, Unst, Shetland!

A13 was ringed 30-June-2017 at Askernish and had travelled a distance of 552 miles in 437 days

A confiding Lapland Bunting was feeding along the strandline on the beach at Eoligarry today close to the remains of the whale. A Cuckoo was seen briefly on roadside wires at Northbay this morning before flying off north, complete with Meadow Pipit escorts! 17 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a Short-eared Owl flew south out at sea past Brevig this evening.

Around 2 hours spent seawatching at Aird an Runair, North Uist (after 09.00 hours) and a little movement SW included: a flock of at least 160 Brent Geese, a Leach's Petrel, 17 Red-throated Divers and an Arctic Tern. Juvenile Gannets are now starting to pass through. Yesterday in 2 hours a couple of Great Skuas drifted N and 26 Red-throated Divers flew SW.
