• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. My first 2 common whitethroats of the year were singing at Garrygall this morning, 13 days later than last year. A sand martin was also in the same area. There were a few more swallows around today but hopefully there are more to arrive still.
There's a lot of very smart looking great northern divers around at present.

An overnight camp near Bragar, Isle of Lewis and woke to a lovely morning and Turnstones, Dunlin and Ringed Plover on the beach. Arctic Terns were fishing close in to the shore and 5 Whimbrel flew over. Common Sandpiper heard. Also in the area: Grey Heron, Great Northern Diver, White Wagtail, Shelduck and Rock Pipit.

A Sedge Warbler was singing in Carloway last night.
