• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. News from Tony Marr, Ness, Isle of Lewis

Birds are reaching the Butt at last. My footnote on 12th about the dearth of divers has not fallen upon deaf ears – today there have been 10!

*White-billed Diver* – 4 this evening between Port of Ness (3 together) and Skigersta (one with a Great Northern Diver). The Skigersta bird was seen to catch, fight and eat a flatfish. All were in non-breeding plumage.

Iceland Gull – a 2nd-W on the roadside pool at the Butt early this morning
Pink-footed Geese – a party of 29 dropped in at Loch Stiapabhat late this afternoon
Barnacle Geese – only 7 remain at Loch Stiapabhat
White-tailed Eagle – 2 over Loch Stiapabhat late this afternoon were watched from the hide talon-grappling and almost fell into the loch!

Redwing – 12 inside the lighthouse compound at the Butt early this morning.
Brambling – one in Port of Ness gardens
Chiffchaff – one also in Port of Ness gardens
