• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A skein of Pink-footed Geese were heard apparently flying S at 07.00 hours over Carinish, North Uist. During a later walk all around Eachkamish (Baleshare), North Uist two small flocks came over (17 flew S and 45 minutes or so later 14 but these turned back N).

Otherwise three Ruff were seen, 15 Black-tailed Godwits and a more approachable Buff-breasted Sandpiper than the bird seen six days previously.

Further to the Pink-footed Goose movement reported yesterday Alastair MacPhearson noted some 200 in 3 groups come down on the sand at Traigh Leathann (Baleshare) in the morning before departing SE. This occurred again in the evening but with more groups and an estimate of 400 (200 were seen going through the North Ford by another observer).

Here at Askernish this morning there were 3 Ruff on the machair and a very noticeable increase in Skylark numbers. In the township, a Pied Flycatcher and Willow Warbler were in Bill’s garden.

A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was amongst the Golden Plover on Bornish machair this afternoon.
