• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra a Jackdaw was circling and calling loudly over Brevig early this morning before heading west. Later in the day a Sandwich Tern was in the bay there and a House Martin flew north. Nearby the Great Tit was still at Creachan. A skein of 79 Pink-footed Geese flew high north over the island at 11.30am. My first 2 Swallows of the year and a Sand Martin were around the township on Vatersay and there was a small influx of Blackcaps. A Common Redpoll was still at Northbay.
