Outer Hebrides / Western Isles bird sightings for today, 18th August 2018. Updated throughout the day

Stornoway, Isle of Lewis
11 Sooty Shearwaters and 20 Storm Petrels were seen from the Ullapool - Stornoway ferry today.

A Ruff was seen there early afternoon

Howmore, South Uist
25 Black-tailed Godwits were on the river

Loch Bee, South Uist
2 Ruff were on the west side of the loch today

Ruhba Ardvule, South Uist
Counting period: 06:05 - 10:55
Weather: Wind WSW F5-6, 8/8 cloud, infrequent light shower, temp 13.5C.
A near 5 hout seawatch this morning produced 1 Red-throated Diver (S), 7 Storm Pertrels (S), 20 Fulmars (S), 4 Sooty Shearwaters (S), 446 Manx Shearwaters (S), 223 Gannets (219S 4N), 5 Bar-tailed Godwits (S), 1 Purple Sandpiper (S), 3 Kittiwakes (2S 1N), 2 Arctic Terns (1S 1N), 1 Pomerine Skua (S) and 1 skua sp (N).
Also present in the area were Greylag Goose 63, Red-throated Diver 2, Common Buzzard 1, Whimbrel 1 and Merlin 1

A two and a half hour seawatch on Vatersay this morning produced 26 Sooty Shearwaters, c900 Manx Shearwaters, 2 adult Pomarine Skuas, 5 Great Skuas and a flock of c20 Black-tailed Godwits all going south. 3 Common Sandpipers were still at Caolas, Vatersay and at least 1 Blackcap was still at Creachen, no doubt local breeders rather than migrants. Lesser Black-backed Gull passage has picked up in the past couple of days with around 20 an hour heading south over Barra today.

Wed 15 August
Kestrel – female/juv flew W over road near Loch Stiapabhat (12.20)
Common Swift – 2 around lighthouse and rock stacks all pm


Thurs 16 August
Common Swift – yeserday’s two present until at least (10.00)
House Sparrow – a flock of 20 in and around the lighthouse compound, and even flew out on to the rock stacks (am)
Merlin – one chased the Swifts and the House Sparrows
Barn Swallow – 12 along the cliffs to W of lighthouse


Friday 17 August
Manx Shearwater – 2,300 E-W in 3.5 hrs past the Butt (08.15 – 11.45) (Robin Heawood)
Black-tailed Godwit – 7 by Loch Stiapabhat (pm)
Sand Martin – 3

Sat 18 August
Sooty Shearwater – 3 E-W past the Butt in 2 hrs (07.00-09.00)
Golden Plover – 8 in off the sea NE-SW past the Butt (07.50)
Black-tailed Godwit – 30 at Loch Stiapabhat (this evening)
