• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. News from Andrew:-

At least 7 white-rumped sandpipers this morning at high tide, though birds flushed by a merlin.

2 Lapland Buntings with a Skylark flock at West Gerinish with a single blackwit at LA2.

Single waxwing, ring ouzel and 5 fieldfares attached to redwing flocks at North Loch Eynort, also the treecreeper, around 10 brambling and 2+ chiffchaffs there.

4 waxwings in Lochboisdale early evening (on hawthorn opposite the bank) but no sign of the rosy starling.

Lots of redwing in my garden with 3 brambling, also 2 backcaps in the ‘Kingbird garden’ in Bornish.

Quite a clear out of migrants on Barra over night. There were still a handful of Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps around the island but I didn't see any Yellow-brows today for the first time in a while. There were still many hundreds of Redwings around and Fieldfares increased to c85. A flock of c20 Whooper Swans flew south-east over the island early afternoon and a further 15 were on Loch Tangasdale along with the Ring-necked Duck.
