• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Lots of nice looking wader habitat on Barra today but precious few waders on it. However 2 crossbills were around Northbay this morning, a whitethroat was at Garrygall and a blackcap was still at Creachen.

Always Birding
After almost tropical storm proportions of rain last night there were a lot of flooded fields today (along with some impassable roads and tracks - even in a 4WD). Happily the birds seemed to be thriving in the conditions. There were 46 Black-tailed Godwits near the golf course in Askernish. At Boisdale there were 3 Ruff, 34 Black-tailed Godwits, 43 Snipe, 1 Greenshank, 42 Curlew and 40+ Redshank on flooded fields.
