• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. It's been a quiet few days on Barra. Best of the bunch today included 25 brent geese at Traigh Mhor, 2 juvenile Iceland gulls and the usual 2nd winter glaucous gull at Ardveenish and an adult Iceland gull and 9 purple sandpipers (a good count for here) at Caolas, Vatersay.

At Aird an Runair, North Uist this morning five or six Barnacle Geese were seen to be colour-ringed. One of these was seen here on 20th.

Not much was moving out to sea but it was quite late in the morning. There was however a Sandwich Tern carying something and being chased by a gull - the gull broke off and the tern continued - dropped and retrieved the item a couple of times as it made its way N. A Wheatear was on the E side of the headland (12 days after the first was reported here).
