• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Always Birding
Unusually, the colour ringed Sanderling seen yesterday on Askernish beach has been confirmed as one ringed in Spain earlier this year. See details below

On Barra there was a Pink-footed Goose and 3 Whooper Swans still at Eoligarry and at least 4 Blackcaps in the churchyard there. Another Pink-foot was at Loch Tangasdale. Around 50 Long-tailed Ducks were still off Craigston. My first Sedge Warbler of the year was singing at Grean and 6 Blackcaps were at Creachan. The Great Tit moved north again to Northbay Plantation. At least 3 Merlins flew north over the island this morning; this has been something of a feature in the past few days and perhaps involves Icelandic breeders.

Loch Bhrusda, Berneray this afternoon - Canada Goose and 2 Barnacles amongst the Greylag. East Beach Berneray had a Little Tern and at least one White Wagtail.

Loch an Sticir - 2 Common Terns this afternoon.

Tigharry this morning - Arctic Skua being seen off by pretty much everything else in the area. Black Tailed Godwits still present this evening.

Recorded 54 species today which I think is the most we’ve ever noted in a day here!
