• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. There was no sign of the Snow Bunting flock at Aird an Runair this morning but near the cattle feeding station/pens on the hill up from the car park 5 Lapland Buntings got up.

At Carinish in the afternoon a flock of 24 Whooper Swans arrived in the Ford from the SE at 16.10 hours. A ♂ Wheatear was my first for the year.

Around 19.00 hours René counted a flock of 73 Whooper Swans flying N at Bayhead.

91 whoopers headed north over Barra during the course of the afternoon. My first 2 great skuas of the year where off Brevig around 4pm. Down on Vatersay at least 5 wheatears are back on territory.
