• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! Always Birding
The histories of all 3 colour ringed birds seen recently on South Uist are as follows:- The Redshank was originally colour ringed and radio tagged in November 2008 in the Firth of Forth as part of a project that finished in 2009. Since then it has been seen on 2 occasions in Iceland, in 2013 and 2021. The Oystercatcher (XY) is an old friend having been ringed as a chick in Iceland in 2018 and seen twice in that year on South Uist. The other Oystercatcher (HHN) was ringed at Sandymount Strand in Dublin Bay on the 02-February this year.

After yesterday's small influx there was just one Hawfinch remaining today by the football pitch at Castlebay. Siskins were at Castlebay, Glen and Northbay. A Common Redpoll was at Glen. An Arctic Skua was chasing Kittiwakes off Brevig.
