• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra the 3w Glaucous Gull was still commuting between Traigh Mhor and Ardveenish. The juvenile Iceland Gull was on the beach at Craigston again and the parvipes type Canada Goose was still on Borve Point. The Snow Bunting flock at Eoligarry is getting smaller; down to ten birds today. There were 17 Whooper Swans on Loch Tangasdale. Given the mild conditions, it was no surprise to hear my first singing Stonechats and Rock Pipits of the spring.

Remains of a Fulmar was the only bird found during RSPB Beached Bird Survey on the Eachkamish part of Baleshare beach, North Uist this afternoon. Despite being given warning calls by several gulls that there was a raptor present I had not got my camera ready before disturbing a Golden Eagle from one of the dunes bordering the beach.
