• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. I met Tom Dewick in Langass Woods and during our conversation he happened to mention that after watching the Yellow-browed Warbler at Langass he saw a Blue Tit (a much rarer visitor to the Uists than the warbler).

In a Lochmaddy gaden, North Uist in the late morning there were at least two Siskins and my first Brambling of the autumn. A flock of ten Herons that must have been disturbed from somewhere nearby flew over.

Always Birding
A very noticable influx of passerines here in Askernish today with Chaffinch being seen for the first time this autumn plus higher numbers than usual of Robin, Linnet and Blackbird. While walking around the patch late this afternoon, there was a single Brent Goose on the beach at Frobost but brief views of a Lesser Yellowlegs on flooded fields at Askernish was definitely a bonus
