• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Always Birding
It's like the heavy overnight rain dissolved all the Lapwing, Curlew and Black-tailed Godwits that were on the machair yesterday and replaced them with numerous Wheatears [some looking like Greenland type] and Meadow Pipits. The only Black-tailed Godwits to be found were c50 at Boisedale on newly flooded fields. An Osprey was at Loch Bornish briefly this afternoon and a Chiffchaff was in the garden here at Askernish. I was also very happy to find one of my colour ringed spuggies in a garden at Kilpheder. S49 was ringed at a juvenile in July this year, last seen on 24th.
