• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. All the usual suspects were present and correct on Barra again: White-billed Diver and 12 Snow Buntings at Eoligarry, parvipes Canada Goose at Borve, 3w Glaucous Gull at Ardveenish, juv Iceland Gull and Coot on Loch Tangasdale, 4 Common Redpolls at Castlebay and 56 Pale-bellied and 1 Dark-bellied Brent at Traigh Mhor. Several Twite were in song around the island; the first time I've heard them singing this year. Also Golden Plover are back and displaying on their breeding territories.
