• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. OH Bird Recorder
I’m up in Lewis for the month and took the opportunity to do an overnight camping trip last night at the abandoned village of Lamshader on the west side (yes, nearly froze to death!).

Yesterday evening i heard my first cuckoo of the year then I went to sleep to the sound of Snipe drumming. Plenty of Meadow Pipits there and this morning there was a Common Sandpiper on the shore.

On Barra, a migrant long-eared owl was at Brevig at first light. A jackdaw was on the machair at Borve this afternoon and the white-billed diver was still off Eoligarry.

Some observations at Balranald NR, North Uist this morning: a skein of 70 Pink-footed Geese arrived from the S (not sure where they finished up), two White-tailed Eagles together came over Aird an Runair and went away to S, there were 23 Whimbrel and in the cemetery a singing Sedge Warbler and a Chiffchaff.
