• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A first for me in Uist. I had a brief but clear view of a Red Kite just before 1pm. It was circling just off the point of our new house at Scotvein Grimsay. It made it's way across the sound to Flodda where it was mobbed by a couple of hoodies, or gulls it was too far away by then to be certain, and carried on its way south over the east of Benbecula.

When we were living in North Wales (from 1983) where there were positive introductions in West Wales and we would go when passing to see kites and buzzards partaking of the free rations. When we left in January 2006 the spread was satisfying relentless and now has progressed over to east Wales where our friends see them frequently. Needless to say there is no driven grouse shooting and the kites have proved a wonderful bait for tourists. Much thinner on the ground when in Aberdeenshire for obvious reasons. Great for you to spot one here.
