• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A little egret flew past my house at Brevig this morning and continued south into the mist. At least 1 yellow-browed warbler was still at Northbay along with a blackcap and 3 chiffchaffs. 2 more chiffchaffs were at Castlebay and singles were at Ardmhor and Morghan. 4 siskins were at Garrygall and one was at Brevig. There appears to have been another influx of snipe; I must of flushed dozens of birds through the course of the day.
On Vatersay this afternoon I was surprised to find a blackcap feeding among the boulders and seaweed on the beach. The bird was remarkably approachable and presumably newly arrived.

In rather murky conditions this morning the Snow Goose along with the Crane were still at Berneray on the Borve machair. Also present were 60 Hooded Crows and on nearby Loch Bhrusda there were 59 Whooper Swans.
