• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. With what John sees at Ardvule, you’d think that seeing seabirds on the patch here at Askernish would be easy being just a little further south, but these stronger westerly winds are my only chance. Happy to say that Manx Shearwaters and Kittiwakes passed in small numbers offshore and a Fulmar flew along the beach so 3 of my target species found, only auks to go now. 2 Arctic Skuas were a bonus.

Several Whimbrels were still on the machair and a Whooper Swan was on Loch Hallan

During a seawatch at Aird an Runair, North Uist this morning (09.25-10.55 hours) there was a little movement N: 19 Fulmars, 21 Manx Shearwaters, 193 Gannets, a couple of Red-throated Divers, seven Kittiwakes and a party of six Long-tailed Skuas. A single Great Skua passed N over the headland prior to the seawatch.
