News from Tony Marr at Ness

The strong SW gale Force 8-9 is still raging through Ness, with most birds skulking or hunkering down out of sight.

The Butt held a surprising variety early this morning (09.00-10.00):
Glaucous Gull – a/the juv near the lighthouse
Common Eider – a drake
Eurasian Wigeon – 18 busily grazing by the roadside pool near the lighthouse
Redwing – 3 inside lighthouse compound
Blackbird – male there
Goldfinch – one there
Snow Buntinga male there

The Butt of Lewis
A Pomarine Skua flew south early this afternoon

South Glendale, South Uist
A female Blackcap and Woodcock were in a garden there

Ruhba Ardvule, South Uist
Counting period: 07:15 - 10:30
Weather: Wind SSW F7-9, mainly 8/8 cloud but a bit brighter later. A few showers. Temp 10.4C

A 3+ hour seawatch this morning produced 4 Eider (3S 1N), 8 Long-tailed Duck (S), 2 Red-breasted Mergansers (S), 8 Red-throated Divers (S), 26 Great Northern Divers (S), 52 Gannets (S), 4 Shag (1S 3N), 16 Kittiwakes (S), 4 Guillemots (S), 2 Razorbills (S), 6 Black Guillemots (S) and 7 auk sp (S)
Also present in the area were Greylag Goose 22, Tufted Duck 2, Long-tailed Duck 2, Red-throated Diver 1, Great Northern Diver 1, Cormorant 15, Rock Dove 57 and Redwing 1
