• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Some lively weather for the WeBS count today.
Ardivachar beach was dominated by gulls: c950 herrings, 44 greater black-backs, 16 black-headeds. Also, c400 bar-tailed godwits, 6 snipes, 20 purple sandpipers, 1 curlew, 21 turnstones, 23 ringed plovers, 22 oystercatchers, 40 sanderlings, 3 eiders, 1 common scoter, 25 cormorants, and 3 whooper swans.
Very little in North Bay which was a surprise as it has the most shelter from the westerlies.
