• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. WTE and Greylag goose

I've just watched a WTE in a fight to the death with a greylag goose on Loch Mhor, Baleshare. It's too heavy for him to fly with but he's managed to get it to the bank. I've seen the Wild Isles footage of them doing this to barnacle geese - has anyone else seen the behaviour with greylags before?

Hi Sarah, and welcome to the website, I personally have not seen them hunting geese, but it is something that is being reported more frequently. They are known to do this on other islands and have been seen to hunt them as a team on Islay, so perhaps it is not so surprising that it happens here too. It must have been a real spectacle, but perhaps not so for the goose. Nature is harsh indeed!

The cycle of life and death - eagles have to eat too. The poor goose escaped several times but returned immediatly to the water so I assume the eagle had damaged its wings fairly early on. It was quite the spectacle, as you say. A brave raven picked up a few scraps.
