• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. In addition to the south Uist birds mentioned above:

Long-tailed duck & great northern diver and c45 black-tailed godwits on Loch Bee with c85 Greenland white-fronts there and 55 barnacle geese on the machair.
3 Slavonian grebes off Balgarva and 3 pale bellied brent geese on the South Ford.
Little egret, Slavonian grebe and juv long-tailed duck on West Loch Ollay.
blackcap, chiffchaff, woodcock and 24 siskins at North Loch Eynort.

I heard from Xavier Bal from the Soay Sheep Project on St Kilda yesterday- he sent me photos of two Grey Phalaropes in Village Bay (17/11/22)- second confirmed Kilda record for Grey Phal. Also, that Spotted Sandpiper is still on the island- first recorded on 18/09, so that's 2 months now. Obviously getting by out there. He also reported the first Black Redstart of the year which was seen on 16/11/22, pushing the year list up to 135.
