• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Barra.
A Mistle Thrush flew south over Castlebay this morning. 2 Siberian Chifchaffs were by the football pitch, one of which gave a few bursts of song: surprising to hear given the torrential rain at the time! A Hawfinch was at Creachan briefly as was the now tail-less Treecreeper. Yellow-browed Warblers were at Glen and Cuithir. There was a minimum of 12 Blackcaps around the island plus c40 Brambling, c800 Redwing and c125 Fieldfare. Long-tailed Ducks have been returning in the past ten days and today included 26 off Craigston.
Yesterday there were 29 Black-throated Divers and a Slavonian Grebe off Ardmhor.
