• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. The American Golden Plover is still on Baleshare by the turn to the beach. Closest bird to the road this afternoon!

At Castlebay this morning there were 2 little egrets on the shore. 2 yellow-browed warblers were calling from gardens and 2 Greenland white-fronts flew south. At the football pitch there were c10 bramblings and a grey wagtail. At Northbay at least 1 yellow-brow was still present along with the lesser whitethroat, a willow warbler, 4 chiffchaffs, a blackcap, 2 siskins and several bramblings. 4 siskins and a blackcap were in the plantation at Ardmhor. At Creachan this afternoon there were 2 flighty hawfinches, c10 bramblings and 2 blackcaps. Not a bad haul for the start of November!
