• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Groups of Whooper Swans seen heading south this morning over Askernish, totalling around 200 birds. Also 20+ Redwings doing the same.

First snow of the winter seen on Ben Mor this morning and more forecast for later today and for tomorrow - I think the birds are very wisely getting ahead of the weather!

Four Snow Buntings flew along Baleshare beach, North Uist this morning. A Golden Eagle was a surprise as it followed shortly after. A pretty poor shot attached as I did not have my camera at the ready.
