• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra the American golden plover was again commuting between the beach and machair near the airport this morning. The yellow-browed warbler was still at Castlebay and 2 new birds were in a sycamore at Northbay along with another presumed eastern lesser whitethroat. 2 snow buntings were at Eoligarry; my first of the season. 2 flocks of whooper swans totalling 17 birds flew south over the island this morning. At least 7 blackcaps, 3 chiffchaffs and 21 bramblings were scattered around the island. A single woodcock was at Brevig.
