• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A quiet day on Barra. The usual wintering flock of long-tailed ducks off Craigston were showing well this afternoon; numbers seem to be fairly constant lately at around 145, certainly an increase on the previous 2 winters. The coal tit that first arrived on the island in October has spent the past few weeks in gardens at Nasg where it has been joined by a 2nd individual. Both birds are busy caching food so it looks unlikely that they're planning on going anywhere in the near future!

Nothing much to add to observations above made in the Rubh Arnal area today. Plenty of finches around including over 20 Linnets and at least 13 Goldfinches. It is not that long ago that Linnets were almost exclusively summer visitors to the Outer Hebrides.
