• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. On Barra, the coal tit found at Skallary this morning quickly relocated to Creachan where it remained until late afternoon; a very welcome Barra tick for its small crowd of admirers! 2 yellow-brows were on the island along with c6 chiffchaffs. 3 barnacles geese were on the machair at Eoligarry and 8 brents were at Traigh Mhor.

I did not spend much time gazing out to sea during a late morning visit to Aird an Runair, North Uist. A skein of some 75 unidentified geese and a Great Northern Diver flew S and a couple of Guillemots flew N. Returning to the beach where earlier there had been six Little Stints I was trying to get a photo of what I thought were three but then realized one was a larger and was in fact a juvenile White-rumped Sandpiper. This one follows an adult here on 2nd/3rd August.

7 Black-tailed Godwits were on the machair here at Askernish today and the Lapland Bunting was still to be found at Frobost. 8 Whooper Swans were at Ormiclate and 4 Ruff were on the machair. Like Chris at Ardivachar, Swallows were more obvious today, 14 being the most seen at Kildonan
