• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. As so often here quite a contrast in the weather from day to day but it did become dryer in the afternoon. A poor decision to venture forth before it cleared up but during a visit to Baleshare four Glaucous Gulls were seen (two on the beach and two at a flooded area). Also just as I was leaving around 12.30 hours a flock of 22 Whooper Swans passed quickly by heading N (seemingly benefiting from the strong tail-wind).

On Barra today 4 juv Iceland gulls around Ardveenish plus a 2nd winter glaucous. Another juv glaucous was on Loch Tangasdale again. There are still at least 8 snow buntings on Traigh Mhor, frequenting the strandline close to the airport building. 31 brent geese were also on Traigh Mhor. Great northern divers appear to be increasing in numbers or at least have moved closer to shore: I counted 78 off of the headland at Leinis yesterday.DSCN7995.JPG
