• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. The main feature of the day was another big arrival of Redwings especially across the west side of the island. Hard to get an accurate count but we estimate 5000 or more birds present today along with far smaller numbers of Fieldfare. The 2 juvenile Velvet Scoters were still off Ardmhor where a presumably returning Green-winged Teal was reported too. A Willow Warbler was at Cuithir, a Yellow-browed Warbler was at Creachan and c15 Blackcaps were around the island. The Carrion Crow that's been around for the past week or so was at Bruernish this afternoon.
