• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. A quick trip at lunchtime saw at least 5 Russian white-fronts (4 ads and 1st W) amongst greylags just NE of Ormiclate Castle - many geese were sleeping and others feeding in awkward to view slopes and rushes so there may have been more white-fronts.

However also 8 nr SW corner of West Loch Ollay inc 5 juv/1st w birds and clearly different to there small flock of up to 12 (11 ads and 1 1st w) that has been present in the area. These birds were with 17 barnacles and no greylags.
