• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Always Birding
Here at Askernish there were 3 Whooper Swans and 3 Shoveller on Loch Hallan while the high tide wader roost on the beach contained 400+ Sanderling, 170 Turnstone, 136 Whimbrel and a single Black-tailed Godwit. A 2nd year Iceland Gull was also patrolling the beach. In the township, Linnet, Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Lesser Redpoll were all busy building nests and a further 2 Whooper Swans were on the loch nearby. A male Siskin was in the garden this afternoon and Bill heard Corncrake and Sedge Warbler singing yesterday.

The white-billed diver, now in almost full summer plumage, reappeared off Eoligarry this afternoon. As with the earlier sightings it was very distant, drifting close to the eastern shore of Fuday. The night heron was at Glen late in the afternoon. 2 grasshopper warblers were reeling on the island today plus 2 common whitethroats, 1 blackcap and a siskin.

Wading birds present at Aird an Rùnair during a late morning visit included a Dunlin still in winter plumage. Apart from plumage could be easily picked out by being longer-billed and legged than others present. Perhaps from further afield than its congeners?

Near Loch nam Magarlan by Kilmuir church a flock of some 80 Whimbrel arrived from the W and appeared to come down beside the loch.
