• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. Eyes and Ears Everywhere
Rubha Ardule, South Uist
69 pale-bellied Brent Geese flying north during a 3 hour seawatch this morning.

Loch nam Feithan, North Uist
The ***American Coot*** is still present today.

Aird an Runair, North Uist
A drake Green-winged Teal still present (ninth day).

From Tony Marr in Ness:-
  • Iceland Gull - three at the Butt this morning and nine at Port of Ness this evening.
  • A White Wagtail at the Port of Ness this afternoon
  • Lapland Bunting, a male in summer plumage in the field by the hide at Loch Stiapavat this evening (news via Vicky Anderson)
  • Whooper Swan – seven came in off The Minch at (20.00) this evening and passed over Port of Ness towards Loch Stiapavat. This morning two at Fivepenny and three others at the south end of the loch.
  • Pinkfooted Geese, 100+ in fields at Port of Ness this morning; this evening 125 came down on Loch Stiapavat.
  • Barnacle Geese, 60+ near Loch Stiapavat this morning, and a similar number left in the evening and flew south down the coast to their regular roosting place (somewhere between Cellar Head and Tolsta Head). This suggests that 40+ have left.
  • Golden Plover – 200 on the machair nr. Eoropie.

The white-billed diver was still off Eoligarry this afternoon though distant. The brent goose flock on Traigh Mhor has increased to 124. An early tree pipit was at Ardmhor and a female blackcap (my 1st of year) was at Cuithir. The glaucous gull was again on Loch Tangasdale.

Apart from a couple of Great Skuas there was nothing else passing Aird an Runair this morning (however only a brief sea-watch). Also there was an Iceland Gull at Loch a' Roe along with the Green-winged Teal (first seen here on 28th March). A ♂ Mallard with brown sides to body is also present.

At least 115 Greenland White-fronted Geese were in the Loch nam Feithean area. Most were on the hilly ground near the south side and feeding; just after midday these got up and flew off N. After several unsuccessful visits recently to spot the American Coot it was showing well today although quite far away. The single ordinary Coot was also present.
