• When here in the Outer Hebrides and looking at a bird, have you ever wondered how rare it is? The status of all species can vary enormously from island to island. How rare is Shoveler on Barra, has Stock Dove been seen on Harris, does Dotterel occur on Benbecula in the autumn, and how common is Blue Tit on North Uist? Well, fret no longer! The Status and Distribution of birds here on the Outer Hebrides has been completely updated and summarised for every species and each of the main islands and outliers. It's been another astonishing day on Barra! After not being seen at all yesterday in poor weather, I had a very brief glimpse of the Tennessee Warbler first thing this morning feeding very low down among the fuchsias next to the cattle grid at Nask. The weather at the time was flat calm and bright. Kathy and I moved onto the football pitch at Castlebay next where 2 Red-eyed Vireos appeared when I made some pishing noises. The two of us were booked in for our flu jags just after 10am so had to dash off, but as we got into the car Kathy saw a small bright bird fly into the canopy. We were back on site ten minutes later and continued to look for Kathy's bird. Ian had now joined us. After perhaps 20 minutes of seeing nothing Scotland's first Philadelphia Vireo started calling from the alders beside the three of us and then showed brilliantly for perhaps the next minute before vanishing again. We headed up to Eoligarry next where the 2 Red-eyed Vireos were still present. Returning down the west side, Kathy found a Barred Warbler at Cuithir. In addition to all this, our first Siskin of the autumn was at Castlebay and a Treecreeper remained at Creachan.
